Day 23--Friday, July 16--Grand View Campground

After a leisurely morning at Captain Cook, we headed north to our next destination--Grand View Campground, northeast of Anchorage. Got to take time to "smell the roses".

Stopped at the sawfest and had lunch in the camper--chainsaw sculptures till 11p.

WARNING--distances on maps are longer than they appear! After reaching our turnoff on the Glenn Hwy., we had another 66 miles to go through absolutely awesome country! And, a couple "white knuckle" stretches for me! It was 7-hour drive for the day--we're used to interstates and 75 mph--not.

Finally, made it to camp -- virtually in the middle of nowhere with views of a glacier. It is located near Sutton which is just a post office. This is the fireweed--Alaska's barameter. It blooms from the bottom and when it reaches the top, there are six weeks till winter.

After setting up camp, we watched sheep grazing on the slope across the road. Ascended 2408 feet from sea level--a pretty steep climb in a few miles--cannot imagine what McKinley will be like.

It was COLD up here--fire was good and bugs were hungry--even with Deets 40%.

This is Lion's Head.

Tomorrow, heading to Talkeetna.
